The Heat are releasing RJ Hampton to create space for Alondes Williams.
Despite their relatively quiet approach at the trade deadline following the Terry Rozier deal, the Miami Heat are clearly not content with their roster status. This was evident when they made a roster move just a day after the deadline. The Heat officially announced the signing of Alondes Williams to a two-way contract. Williams, who has been showcasing his skills with the team’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, has been putting up impressive numbers, averaging 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He’s been shooting efficiently, with a 49.9 percent field goal rate and 37.3 percent from beyond the arc. Williams’ stellar performance earned him a spot on the G League team for the NBA Rising Stars Challenge, highlighting his potential and impact.
To accommodate the signing of Alondes Williams, the Heat have decided to waive RJ Hampton, a former first-round pick of the Denver Nuggets and once highly touted prospect in the NBL. Hampton, who had signed a two-way deal with Miami during the offseason, has faced challenges in delivering strong performances both in the G League and during his opportunities with the official roster.
In his eight appearances with the Heat, including two starts, Hampton only managed to average 1.3 points and 1.0 assists in 9.5 minutes per game. His shooting percentages were also disappointing, with just 28.6 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Now, Alondes Williams will have the opportunity to showcase his abilities at the NBA level. The Heat are undoubtedly hoping that his impressive performances in the G League will translate to success in the NBA, even if only for a brief period.
