Newcastle United has revealed that highly-rated goalkeeper Max Thompson has extended his contract, securing his presence on Tyneside until 2025.
The 19-year-old, who has already represented England at the U18 level, recently concluded an impressive loan stint in League One. During his time with Northampton, he managed to secure five clean sheets in 15 appearances, further highlighting his potential and talent.
The Newcastle-born youngster has been part of our Academy since the age of 11 and is under the representation of the same agency that manages Nick Pope.
With Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie’s contracts expiring this summer, and 35-year-old Martin Dubravka expected to seek regular game time elsewhere once Pope is fit, the club is seeking a younger option who could challenge Pope in the future.
Thompson has been training with the first-team since his return from Northampton and could be a player to keep an eye on this summer. He might be given the opportunity to showcase his talents during pre-season, potentially leading to another loan move to further his development.
In an interview with NUFC.co.uk following the contract extension, Thompson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m really excited to continue my career with the club I’ve supported and grown up with. It’s another opportunity to try and progress further as a footballer and, hopefully, make it as a player at Newcastle United.”
“The development plan that has been established for me and the clear direction on where they want me to go were among the main factors in my decision to sign a new contract. It demonstrates a vote of confidence that they recognize my progress and I’ve been rewarded for it,” Thompson stated.
