Steelers close to hiring ex-Atlanta coach as OC

The Pittsburgh Steelers are close to finalizing a deal with Arthur Smith to become their new offensive coordinator, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. Smith, recently dismissed as head coach by the Atlanta Falcons after three consecutive 7-10 seasons, previously showcased his offensive prowess as the coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and 2020. Despite his success in Tennessee, Smith’s tenure in Atlanta saw the team struggle in both yards and points.

The Steelers, who secured a playoff berth with a 10-7 record despite their offensive challenges, are optimistic that Smith can bring positive changes to their underperforming offense. Steelers President Art Rooney II expressed the team’s belief in starting quarterback Kenny Pickett but emphasized the need for quality play from the quarterback position. The possibility of re-signing free-agent Mason Rudolph, who impressed towards the end of the season, was also mentioned by Rooney.

Smith’s task will be to devise an offensive strategy that generates more points, alleviating pressure on the Steelers’ strong defense. The team has struggled with scoring, ranking 21st or worse in four of the past five seasons. The decision to part ways with offensive coordinator Matt Canada in-season highlighted the team’s desire for improvement.

Despite offensive challenges, the Steelers have promising players like running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, wide receivers George Pickens and Diontae Johnson, and tight end Pat Freiermuth. Rooney expressed the team’s eagerness for a fresh approach and the hiring of someone who can help the young players grow and elevate the offense consistently.

The Steelers, known for their competitive spirit, have struggled in the playoffs, losing five consecutive games, with four of them by double digits. Arthur Smith’s offensive approach, which aligns with the Steelers’ goal of building a physical, run-focused team, could potentially bring a positive change to the team’s performance.
