In their ongoing efforts to strengthen the roster for a potential third title in four years, the Georgia Bulldogs football program has encountered a setback. A key loss occurred with the decommitment of a highly-touted secondary recruit. According to information from On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett, four-star cornerback Tae Harris has decided to rescind his commitment to Georgia.
This departure adds to a trend where other highly-ranked recruits from upcoming classes have also opted to withdraw their commitments from Georgia. Notably, five-star recruit Dylan Raiola (2024) made a similar move by switching his commitment from Georgia to Nebraska. The loss of Tae Harris could potentially impact Georgia’s defense in the coming years, underscoring the challenges teams face in retaining top talent during the recruiting process.
Four-Star CB Tae Harris: Reopens Commitment
Tae Harris, a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite, holds the 27th rank among cornerbacks in the upcoming class. Following his decommitment from Georgia, Harris is set to reopen his recruiting process with offers on the table from Colorado, Kentucky, Florida, and Georgia Tech. The Cedartown-based athlete from Georgia has showcased his versatility by contributing significantly on both sides of the ball in high school.
In the previous season, Harris recorded 87 carries for 421 yards and five touchdowns while also displaying his receiving skills with ten catches for 221 yards and four scores. On the defensive end, the junior notched 44 tackles, a tackle for loss, and caused three fumbles. Beyond football, Harris is involved in track and field, boasting an impressive best time of 10.73 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Standing at five-foot-ten and weighing 180 pounds, he is currently considered a frontrunner for the Florida Gators, according to 247Sports.
Georgia Bulldogs: Looking to Return to CFP
The Georgia Bulldogs had high hopes of entering the SEC Championship with an undefeated record, aiming for a third College Football Playoff appearance. Unfortunately, they suffered a narrow defeat to the one-loss Alabama Crimson Tide, missing out on the four-team postseason field. Looking ahead to the next season, head coach Kirby Smart aims to lead another stellar campaign.
Georgia will benefit from the return of quarterback Carson Beck, who had an impressive 2023 season, throwing 34 touchdowns and six interceptions. Additionally, the team has been active in the transfer portal, securing notable additions such as star running back Trevor Etienne from the Florida Gators, wide receiver Ondon Humphreys from Vanderbilt, safety Jake Pope from Alabama, and skill player Michael Jackson III from USC.
The Bulldogs are optimistic about their prospects next season, especially with the expansion of the postseason field to 12 teams. This change in the playoff format provides more opportunities for one-loss teams, like Georgia this season, who fell in their conference championship, to compete for the national title.
