Birmingham City provides updates on Blackburn Rovers and Notts County transfer targets.

The Blues were linked with both forwards during the January transfer window.

Birmingham City’s prospects of signing Blackburn Rovers’ Sam Gallagher and/or Notts County’s Macaulay Langstaff have increased following a recent Blues transfer update.

With the Blues looking to strengthen their attacking options, both players have been linked with a move to St Andrews this month, but it appears that not everything is as it seems.

Birmingham City will not sign Sam Gallagher

First, BirminghamLive reports that the Blues will not sign Blackburn Rovers forward Sam Gallagher this month.

This is despite reports over the weekend claiming that the Blues had begun talks about his signing.

According to Football Insider, the Blues had begun talks with Blackburn about a potential loan deal, with Blues manager Mowbray prioritising a new striker this month.

However, BirminghamLive’s Brian Dick has debunked the idea, writing the following about the club’s interest in Gallagher in a recent Q&A:.

“I got told no on that one, so I’m going to trust that and say it won’t happen,” Dick told BirminghamLive of the club’s interest in Gallagher.

“It always struck me as weird. Gallagher did not have a nice loan period when he originally arrived at the Blues, albeit during Steve Cotterill’s turbulent tenure, but he has had a beef with Blues fans ever since. Inevitably, he would score for Blackburn on the final day of the season, and then he would celebrate in front of the Blues fans, cupped ears or fingers to the lips.

“That struck me as someone seeing Mowbray’s success with Gallagher at another club and combining the two and sticking him at Birmingham City.

“He has been linked with Ipswich as well.”

Macaulay Langstaff is not on Birmingham City’s radar.

Birmingham City’s reported interest in Notts County attacker Macaulay Langstaff appears to follow a similar pattern.

According to a recent Graeme Bailey/HITC article, the Blues are one of several EFL clubs interested in the League Two striker this month, who has 20 league goals in 27 games this season.

However, it appears that these links are also speculations, with BirminghamLive journalist Alex Dicken providing an update on the club’s alleged pursuit of the 26-year-old.

“He’s not someone who is believed to be on Blue’s radar at the moment.”

Birmingham City lacks goal-scoring alternatives.

Given that the aforementioned links have been removed, Blues fans may be concerned about the club’s lack of goal-scoring attackers, especially given speculations of Jay Stansfield’s prospective Fulham recall.

Championship Table (As it stands January 22nd)
Team P GD Pts
17 Blackburn Rovers 28 -12 33
18 Millwall 28 -7 32
19 Stoke City 28 -7 32
20 Birmingham City 28 -10 32
21 Huddersfield Town 28 -18 27
22 QPR 28 -15 24
23 Sheffield Wednesday 28 -24 22
24 Rotherham United 28 -27 19

Mowbray’s side is 20th in the Championship despite a weekend away triumph at Stoke City, with Stansfield among those who scored.

The loanee is the club’s leading scorer this season, and his departure would be a significant loss.

This month, two other Blues strikers, Scott Hogan and Lukas Jutkiewicz, have also been linked with moves away from St Andrews.
