Birmingham City can capitalise on Tony Mowbray’s surprise with ‘amazing’ Alex Pritchard.

Birmingham City have been linked with a bid for Sunderland midfielder Alex Pritchard in the January transfer window, reuniting him with Tony Mowbray.

Tony Mowbray was confident that Alex Pritchard would leave Sunderland this summer, so much so that he publicly confirmed it.

“I like Pritch,” he declared before the summer window’s transfer deadline. “Pritch is a good player. I don’t want to be too prescriptive, but Pritch appears to be leaving the football club. We have to get past that and go on; that is football.”

By early September, Pritchard was still a Sunderland player. Mowbray admitted that he couldn’t believe he still had the playmaker after appearing to be prepared to lose him. Of course, Mowbray employed Pritchard until his unceremonious dismissal in December.

“We’ll have conversations with Alex. To be honest, we have already had several conversations. “What a good footballer he is,” Mowbray said. “I’m just surprised the phone hasn’t rung as much as it should have because he’s a fantastic footballer. We have to attempt to optimize his time on the pitch while also developing the young players I’m referring to.”
