There have been three games that have gone into overtime since the College Football Playoff was instituted in 2014. Interestingly, the first two times were Georgia’s 2018 squad, which lost in overtime in the national championship game after winning in overtime in the semifinals. A six-year period without any overtime games occurred before Michigan’s victory against Alabama in the Rose Bowl of 2024. These overtime classics include some remarks and the plays that won the game.

Both teams settled for field goals in the first overtime period, and Oklahoma set itself up for a 27-yard field goal to give the Sooners the lead in the second overtime period. The Bulldogs had a chance to win the game with a score, but Georgia’s special teams unit produced the play of the game by stopping the short-field goal attempt.

With just two plays remaining, Georgia was able to conclude the game and go to its first national championship game since 1980, when Sony Michel broke through the Oklahoma defense and found the end zone from 27 yards out.

Georgia finds itself in overtime once more, this time against SEC rival Alabama, only one week after overcoming Oklahoma.

In the national championship game, Mecole Hardman’s 80-yard touchdown run gave Georgia a respectable lead at 20-7 halfway through the third quarter. However, as head coach Nick Saban substituted rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for the more seasoned starter, Jalen Hurts, it was all Alabama from that point on.

With less than four minutes left in regulation, Tagovailoa’s touchdown throw helped Alabama rally and tie the game, proving that Saban and the Crimson Tide made the right decision.

With the ball in overtime, Georgia quickly went into a three-and-out before settling for a long field goal to grab a 23-20 lead.

Following Alabama’s 16-yard loss on the opening offensive play of overtime, Tagovailoa turned backward and connected with Devonta Smith for the game-winning touchdown on 2nd and 26 that would win the championship.

Two of the three overtime games in CFP history have taken place at the Rose Bowl, and the 2024 edition was every bit as crazy as the 2018 one.
