Southampton have entered the transfer market, but don’t get too thrilled just yet because it’s a starlet rather than a full-fledged star.
The Daily Echo has learned that the latest Saint is Cork City’s 18-year-old midfielder Joe O’Brien Whitmarsh.
The youngster is highly regarded and has been said to be a target for other English clubs, with Everton expressing particular interest.
He was on trial at Staplewood in December, and it appears that the Saints liked what they saw of the central midfielder, who broke into the Cork City first team this season, making 23 appearances and scoring four goals and one assist.
So, while he will join our U21 academy squad, he has senior football experience and could be a potential star sooner than we expect.
