Players at Auburn Respond To Five-Star Ryan Williams’ De-Commitment After Another Elite Retirement

Wide receiver Ryan Williams, a five-star recruit and former Crimson Tide commit, renounced his commitment following Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s retirement on Wednesday.

Before Saban left, Williams, a native of Saraland, was already considered a top target by Auburn. He was just reclassified from the 2025 group into the 2024 class.

Auburn’s 2024 class has four receivers: Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain, rated four stars, and five-stars Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson. They comprise four members of the wide receiver class known as the “Freeze 5,” which is supposed to turn Auburn’s offense around.

Williams is the fifth receiver—the one who isn’t there. Following his withdrawal from his pledge to Alabama, Williams was already considered a very likely flip target, making Auburn the front-runner to get the explosive receiver.

Right now, Auburn’s class is among the top 10 in the country. If Williams committed, the group would rank in the top five. Williams’s final formal visit will be to Auburn. Williams’s decision will be made on his birthday, February 9.
