Jay Stansfield’s latest move comes as the club takes a stand amidst interest from Sunderland and Ipswich Town.
The most recent news on Birmingham City striker Jay Stansfield, who is currently on loan from Fulham, amid interest from Sunderland and Ipswich Town in a deal.
At Birmingham City, Jay Stansfield is carrying on as usual in spite of renewed interest in recent weeks from Sunderland and Ipswich Town. The Fulham striker, who turned down 13 transfer bids in the summer to stay with the Blues, may still be called back from his loan and transferred, but he is dedicated to his current project.
As things stand, Stansfield is still with Birmingham and will be there until the end of the current campaign, barring a swift move from Fulham. Prior to his dismissal at the beginning of January, Wayne Rooney disclosed that the Cottagers had a “small window” to shorten Stansfield’s season. The duration of that window was not made public.
“We’ve communicated with Fulham. He will be with us, as far as we know. There is a window of opportunity for Fulham to get him back. We have no control over it if that’s what they do,” Rooney stated to the reporters on December 28.
Naturally, since Birmingham divested Rooney of his responsibilities and installed the more seasoned Tony Mowbray in his stead, things have altered. The Blues’ decline in the league standings was concerning, but it looks like things are starting to stabilize.
Can Fulham bring Stansfield back?
When Stansfield came at St Andrew’s on August 24, he would not have predicted two managerial changes so soon after, but that is how things have turned out. The 21-year-old’s advancement should have been hindered by the rate of change, but instead of giving up, he has concentrated on the task at hand.
Although the youthful forward has had limited playing time, his 23 Championship appearances have yielded seven goals and two assists, which is a good return. In the few months that he has been in Birmingham, Stansfield has clearly grown more confident, and he has also consistently received game time.
Fulham will probably be happy with those aspects, but it’s still unclear if Stansfield should be sent somewhere else for an even greater experience. While Sunderland and Ipswich are vying for play-off spots, Ipswich is striving for automatic promotion, and the best the Blues might hope for this season is mid-table.
This is a decision that is likely to require some additional time, unless, of course, the “window” that Rooney mentioned has already passed. Then this is excellent news for Birmingham. The position is to maintain composure and carry on as usual if it hasn’t ended. In the meanwhile, the player is content and preparing for Saturday’s match against Swansea City as usual.
