Yankuba Minteh hopes to create a strong mark in AFCON 2023.
The Newcastle United winger was among the 43 players named for pre-tournament training.
Yankuba Minteh has already been chosen to the Gambia’s final roster of 27.
The planning for the African Cup of Nations to avoid a collision with the main European leagues are not going well.
These 2023 finals were scheduled to take place in the summer (of 2023), but were postponed to January 13 to February 11, 2024, due to concerns about bad summer weather in Ivory Coast.
Most Newcastle United fans will know the issues that arose back then, with concerns about potentially losing players like Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba, and Cheick Tiote for a significant number of games at a critical point in the Premier League season.
Unlike other Premier League clubs, Newcastle United have no immediate issues in this regard.
This season, Yankuba Minteh is on loan at Feyenoord and doing well.
Minteh made his senior international debut for Gambia in September, scoring a critical goal to help his team draw 2-2 in their last group game, confirming their qualifying for the AFCON 2023 finals this month.
There are 24 countries competing, and Gambia is in the same group as Senegal, Cameroon, and Guinea.
