The day after the regular season is an unofficial football schedule day when teams fire their coaches and look ahead.
Some moves will be observed from a mile away. Others will surprise football fans. Bill Belichick’s future with the Patriots is unknown. For now, here’s a roundup of today’s coaching news, rumors, and firings:
Rumor: Mike Vrabel may leave Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report says the Titans are considering Vrabel’s future and that he is “interested” in joining New England.
An assistant coach firing in New York – According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Giants have fired offensive line coach Bobby Johnson.
The Panthers will need a new GM, too – According to NFL Network, the Panthers have fired GM Scott Fitterer. This comes following the team’s midseason sacking of coach Frank Reich.
The Washington Commanders have reportedly sacked head coach Ron Rivera – According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rivera is out in Washington.
The Atlanta Falcons have sacked head coach Arthur Smith — This is the first termination of 2024. Technically, the move came before Monday. Reports that Smith had been dismissed started to trickle out after the Falcons’ season-ending loss to the New Orleans Saints. The team officially announced the termination in a statement made shortly after midnight.
“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” team chairman Arthur Blank said in a statement. “We have profound respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all the hard work and dedication he has put into the Falcons over the last three years. He has been part of developing a positive culture in our football squad, but the results on the field have not matched our expectations. After extensive thinking and deliberation, we have chosen the best route ahead for our squad is new leadership in the head coaching position.”
Previous firings
The first NFL coach dismissed in 2023 was former Patriots assistant Josh McDaniels, who was let go by the Las Vegas Raiders midseason. After that, the Carolina Panthers dismissed Frank Reich just 11 games into his debut season with the franchise. Then there was Brandon Staley, who was fired by the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 15.
