Barryn Sorrell, a defensive lineman for Texas, had a lot of memories from his time with the Longhorns. There will be more happy times for him in Austin in the upcoming year. Sorrell declared on Sunday that he plans to return to Texas for the 2024 season via X, formerly known as Twitter. Sorrell’s eligibility on the Forty Acres will expire after one year. “I look forward to building more memories here while making this team special again,” Sorrell stated in a letter. Sorrell started out as a backup defensive lineman and has experienced all three phases of the Longhorns’ turnaround under Steve Sarkisian. He was on the team that finished with a 5-7 record. He contributed to the Horns’ 2022 turnaround, which saw them rise to 8-5.

In 2023, Sorrell played in all 14 games as a starter and finished with 37 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks. He had a significant role in the Horns’ ability to win the Big 12 for the first time since 2009 and finish with a top-10 run defense. Sorrell was given credit for three tackles and two pressures in the Longhorns’ 37-31 Sugar Bowl loss to No. 2 Washington in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal. The Longhorns have kept both of their starting edge rushers with Sorrell back in the lineup. Back in 2024, leading sack artist and sophomore Ethan Burke was always anticipated. Trey Moore, the AAC Defensive Player of the Year and UTSA EDGE, committed to the Longhorns last month through the portal.
