Carlos Corberan could move for £3m-rated gem to ease the loss of Sarmiento.
Under Carlos Corberan, West Bromwich Albion has been pushing for promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in three years, but the team has been erratic lately.
After a 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Swansea City on Monday, the Baggies’ Christmas fire was soon put out after back-to-back victories over Norwich City and Leeds United.
To ease Jed Wallace’s injury, West Brom have to release their “perfect” 7/10 star.
A new set of injury issues at the Hawthorns may force Carlos Corberan to start this West Brom gem.
To make matters worse, West Brom lost a key player this week. To make up for the loss, the team may try to make a move in the transfer market, and they should undoubtedly rekindle their interest in a particular Portuguese attacker.
Jeremy Sarmiento’s transfer to West Bromwich Albion
After spending a half-season at the Hawthorns, loanee Jeremy Sarmiento has returned to Brighton and Hove Albion, the club stated on New Year’s Day.
The Ecuadorian’s return to the south coast was initially thought to be the result of Brighton’s recent injury crisis in the forward areas. However, reports on Tuesday morning indicated that the Seagulls are willing to let Sarmiento return on loan, this time to West Brom’s rival for promotion, Ipswich Town.
Sarmiento’s stay in the Midlands was not entirely uneventful. Under Corberan, the 21-year-old was reduced to a simple squad member and played an average of 35 minutes per game for the duration of the season. The youthful player played 737 minutes with the Baggies in all, although he made 21 appearances overall, including 20 in the Championship.
Grady Diangana will now travel on international duty with the DR Congo to compete in the African Cup of Nations, but the head coach’s biggest concern will be his lack of depth in the wide areas given that the seasoned Matt Phillips is out until April at the worst.
The team has to make an effort to get a new winger before the January transfer window ends, and there may be a specific player who would be the ideal match.
This season’s stats for Tiago Gouveia
The attacker Tiago Gouveia of Benfica is one player with whom West Bromwich Albion has previously been associated. Although a transaction never materialized, Mike McGrath of The Telegraph reported during the summer transfer season that the Baggies were monitoring Gouveia because Corberan was eager to reinforce his striking department.
But, it would make sense for West Brom to show interest in the 22-year-old again considering the recent losses of Sarmiento and Diangana.
Gouveia has played barely 185 minutes overall for Benfica, or just 23 minutes per game, despite making eight appearances for the Liga Portugal champions this season, including three in the UEFA Champions League.
Though the winger, who can play on either flank, has produced 28 goal contributions in all competitions since the start of the 2019–20 season, Gouveia’s career records with Benfica and Estoril are also highly outstanding. The position that West Brom most needs to fill is on the left wing, where he has been most productive.
Tom Fellows, an Englishman who has made 16 appearances this season without recording a goal or an assist, is rumored to be leaving the Hawthorns this month, which might be a further setback to Corberan and his team’s aspirations of promotion. Additionally, Fellows has contributed 27 goals for West Brom since the 2019–20 season began, none of which have come after making the jump to the first team.
After recording 11 goals, 11 assists, and 11 big chances in the league the previous season, Gouveia may be considered an improvement over the Englishman. Fellow, on the other hand, has only created two “big chances” since returning to the first team this summer. Fellow failed to score and only managed two assists in League Two with Crawley Town in 2022–2023.
The £3 million-rated jewel might assist fill a huge void in West Brom’s offensive line in the interim, buying Corberan until the summer, even if only a loan deal was feasible.
