In the Sugar Bowl on Monday night, the Texas Longhorns suffered a sad defeat to the Washington Huskies to conclude their season. With star wide receiver Xavier Worthy declaring for the NFL Draft, it will also be the final game for one of their best players—possibly the greatest in school history—as of Tuesday.
In his Instagram video, Worthy stated, “My time here at the University of Texas has been filled with highs, lows, lessons, and blessings.” “They are all a part of my journey and my current identity. I will always be appreciative of everyone who has supported and believed in me. My mother, relatives, football brothers, day one coaches, and true admirers. I will always be grateful for the blessing of being able to play the sport I love at this level alongside some of the best players in the world.” “With that being said, I will be declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft.” Related: Leon O’Neal Jr., an ex-athlete, and Xavier Worthy trade jabs on X After playing in the Sugar Bowl, Worthy concludes his career in Texas as the fourth-best wide receiver of all time with 198 receptions for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns. Along with being named an All-American this season with the Horns, he was perhaps the finest punt returner in college football, averaging 16.9 yards per return and 371 return yards, including a score. Roy Williams was the last Texas pass catcher to be selected in the first round, which would make Worthy the first to go in that order since 2004.
