Sunderland won for the first time under Michael Beale on Boxing Day in front of a 2,163 sold out away end at Hull City.
Trai Hume, a defender for Sunderland, honored the team’s supporters who traveled when the Black Cats overcame Hull City on Boxing Day at the MKM Stadium.
After suffering a depressing 3-0 loss to Coventry City the previous weekend, Michael Beale’s team overcame it to overcome play-off rivals Hull City with a late goal from Jack Clarke.
Hume, who started the match for Sunderland at left back, was quick to commend the 2,163 sold-out away end at Hull City and clarify that his teammates intended to make up for the fans’ humiliation at the hands of Coventry.
“They scored three goals, you know, so it wasn’t the best Coventry defeat,” Hume said to The Echo. It wasn’t pleasant for the staff or the players. However, I believe it was justified to come here and defeat a strong, well-prepared squad in front of us in order to get three points. It was excellent.
“When Clarkey scored, the sold-out away end cheered. We felt that once they came down and showed their support, they deserved something, and we thought it was great.
“Whether things are going well or poorly, the away end is usually packed, the fans are amazing, and it’s great to give them the three points after traveling so far on Boxing Day.
When Hume first joined Sunderland, the team was in League One. Wearsiders have grown to love Hume for his hard work and reputation for tough tackling.
When questioned about the admiration Sunderland fans had for his tackling prowess, Hume replied, “Yeah, a little bit.” “I attempt to dive right in. That’s how I was raised and have always played. I simply try to put forth a lot of effort and work hard since that’s how I was raised.”
This Friday at the New York Stadium in the Championship, Sunderland will play Rotherham United. Then, on New Year’s Day, Beale’s team will take on Preston North End at the Stadium of Light in preparation for their crucial FA Cup match against Newcastle United on January 6.
