‘You just can’t do that’: Michael Owen blasts £28m most rated Aston Villa star’s actions v Manchester United

Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day was a massive knockout to the team’s confidence and morale.

Let’s not beat around the bush, many saw this coming because of the performances away from home this season.

One of the main reasons behind Aston Villa’s collapse at Old Trafford was the inability to keep the ball, Diego Carlos played a part in that.

Michael Owen slammed the £28 million signing for allowing Manchester United back into the game with his wayward pass that led to their opening goal, as he told Premier League Productions (26/12/23 at 10:25 pm).

Many will point towards Unai Emery’s tactics and how he needs to change it on the road because Villa are simply too open.

But Michael Owen feels that it’s not the system that is the problem, but the individuals and their errors.

The offside trap was working up until Diego Carlos passed the ball straight to a Manchester United player and let them loose, so that clearly needs to improve ASAP, or the same old story will write itself again.

“His centre-half gave the ball away. You just simply can’t do that. That’s what he will be taking out of it. Don’t give the ball away and we don’t concede that goal. Nothing to do with the system is what he will think.

“I think he will continue doing what he is doing. They are having a fantastic season. Brilliant in the first half. Then the bandwagon started and it was hard to stop it.”

Wake-up call needed at Aston Villa

This is now a very tricky period for the team. If the team doesn’t wake up and fix up, then we are in deep, deep trouble.

Villa will just continue to slide down the table and not even finish in the Premier League’s top six.

That would be quite embarrassing given that there was title talk not so long ago.

At the end of the day, you are as good as your last game. Beat Burnley on Saturday and the team will end the year on a massive high.
