6 Celtic Harry Kewell replacements as first team coach set for Yokohama
Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers now 4 key players that may leave in January transfer
The Australian is set to depart Parkhead to take up the job in Japan
Harry Kewell is now on the verge of leaving Celtic to take the Yokohama F Marinos manager’s job.
The Australian coach at Parkhead had been rumoured to be first choice of the J League giants to replace his countryman, Kevin Muscat, after he opted to leave at the end of their season. It continues the trend of Australians managing the club but it also leaves a role open in the Hoops dugout for Brendan Rodgers to potentially look to fill.
The Northern Irishman has Gavin Strachan and John Kennedy in situ already while goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods and Glen Driscoll also have their place beside the boss.
But could there be another coach welcome inside the first-team changing room? If so, who might Rodgers turn to?
Here are five possible options the gaffer could possibly look to in a bid to swap out Kewell’s experience.
Kolo Toure
The Ivorian played under Rodgers before he made his way into a coaching role. He must’ve possessed the type of talent on the training pitch that the manager is looking for as he was then taken to Leicester City to work with him there, too.
Was given a chance on his own as Wigan boss but that didn’t work out and he’s now without a club. Could be enticed back to Glasgow should Rodgers make that call.
Stevie Hammell
Was brought to Parkhead under Ange Postecoglou following his Motherwell sacking as their head of academy coaching. But should Rodgers look closer, he could be an ideal replacement on the first-team bench. Has knowledge and experience of working with top pros compared to the kids and would certainly be an option.
Scott Brown
An obvious candidate, Broony has been given the chance as a manager in his own right with Fleetwood and that can only boost his knowledge and nous as a tactical coach. He’s a bonafide legend around these parts and could be tempted to work with his old boss with the potential pathway being his own man again with much more know-how having worked with a top coach.
Darren O’Dea
He’s been working with the academy and B team since arriving back at Celtic in a coaching capacity. He’s taken them to the UEFA Youth League and experienced highs and lows as well as in the Lowland League where not all has gone particularly well.
His ambition has him looking at management down the line but being in the Celtic dugout would be a huge feather in the cap and learning experience.
Charlie Mulgrew
Has dabbled in coaching at Dundee United even if perhaps not the amount he’d have liked as he was still playing at the time before he was eventually released.
Has experience playing for the club and would likely jump at the chance to work with first-team players of that calibre and learning from Rodgers as well as Kennedy and his other coaches. Has spoken about going into coaching and management eventually and this would be the ideal grounding.
Adam Sadler
The former goalie has worked at Leicester as a coach since 2014 and that included alongside Rodgers with the Foxes for four years. He’d certainly offer a different element compared to the other guys on the bench but his Premier League experience would benefit the players on the pitch. Is without a club having left Leicester when Enzo Maresca arrived.
