Carlton Palmer has offered his thoughts on the reported Saints January transfer target.

Southampton are reportedly eyeing a big-money bid for Juventus starlet Matias Soule in January.
Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer believes the club should focus on finding a proven goalscorer for their promotion campaign, and is sceptical of the deal.

Soule is also attracting interest from Premier League clubs like Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United.

It has been a good start to the season for Southampton under Russell Martin.

As you can see above, the Saints currently occupy fourth spot in the division but are quite adrift of the top two and the automatic promotion places.

Of course, with the January transfer window just around the corner, it presents the Saints with an opportunity to strengthen their squad and, consequently, their promotion challenge.

One player linked with the Saints recently was Juventus starlet Matias Soulé.

Indeed, according to La Stampa, via TuttoMercatoWeb, Southampton are plotting a big-money January move for the 20-year-old.

That report claims that the Saints are eyeing a 30 million euro bid for the Argentinian winger, which would be a huge deal given the club are a Championship side.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Frosinone in Serie A, where he has scored six goals in 14 appearances so far this season.
