Richardson Heartfelt words after the clash vs
Plymouth Argyle

Rotherham United Manager Leam Richardson thought the three-two loss at Plymouth yesterday was a ‘tough one to take’.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after the away loss, the Millers new Head Coach said, ‘ thought we started the game extremely well and deserved to go ahead but then it turned on a penalty. But I think we deserved something out of the game.

At the time of the interview Richardson hadn’t seen the penalty incident back, I’ve now seen it back twice and it was definitely a penalty.

‘I thought in possession we had really good patterns (of play) and out of possession we looked comfortable. I’ve only been here a couple of days but the lads are very disciplined and the work that we put in showed on the pitch. And even with ten men I thought we deserved something because we worked hard to get back into the game and we deserved a positive result today.

‘We will take a lot of pleasure from the work ethic from today. We have to be mindful of the challenge, mindful of where we are as a group and make sure we grow. We need to give a good account of ourselves and to do that we need to be a strong professional group and we need to build on the good qualities.’

Asked about the second sending off in a week for experienced defender Daniel Ayala, Leam said, ‘Experienced players are still learning but from an experienced player you’d expect a better decision. Moving forward we will speak to Daniel and move on from there.’

It was stupid, that’s all you can say – that’s two silly decisions from Ayala that’s led to two red cards.

Leam was asked if he thought the home fans swayed the referee in decisions at Home Park yesterday, the Millers Boss said, ‘Referee’s have got a million decisions to make and they don’t have the pleasure of standing on the touchline or sitting in the stands watching so we have to be respectful.’

Leam has brought in Rob Kelly as his second in command and when asked about him he said, ‘His CV speaks for itself. He’s been to many clubs both at home and I’ve known him a very long time so there’s a big trust there. He’s excellent as a coach, as a person and a great addition to the football club.’

During his playing career Rob was a midfielder with Leicester City and Wolves before an injury curtailed his playing career at the young age of twenty-four. He trained as a journalist before taking up a coaching position with Wolves then Watford, Blackburn Rovers and Watford before moving back to coach the Foxes where he took over as caretaker manager before being given the job full-time in 2006. He then went to Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Barrow often taking over a caretaker manager before 2022 saw him join Leam Richardson as assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. July this year saw Rob back at Preston as first team coach.

All at Vital Rotherham welcome Rob to the New York Stadium.
