Breaking News: Bruno Guimaraes Makes Barcelona Claims As Decision Been Taken After Champions League Exits
Newcastle United were dealt a major setback on Wednesday night.
Not only did AC Milan’s comeback win knock them out of the Champions League, it ended Newcastle’s European journey entirely.
While Eddie Howe’s side have acquitted themselves well in Europe this season, they find themselves without any post-Christmas continental competition.
Though the difficulty of their group and an injury crisis perhaps offer mitigating circumstances, there is little doubt to finish bottom of the pile after thrashing Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park is majorly disappointing.
Naturally, reports are now emerging suggesting key players are unhappy with the situation.
Bruno Guimaraes to Barcelona: Newcastle transfer latest
Indeed, according to Football Transfers, Bruno Guimaraes is “furious” about the team’s early exit from Europe.
They claim the Brazilian, who only signed a new contract at the club in October, could be open to offers if Newcastle do not get back into Europe’s elite competition, such is his desire to operate at that level.
Barcelona, who were linked during the summer, are said to be ready to pounce should the midfielder begin to look elsewhere. In fact, they could even sell Robert Lewandowski in order to raise funds to sign Guimaraes.
The striker has interest from the Saudi Pro League and could be forced out in order to pay the reported £100m release clause Guimaraes has in his contract.
For his part, the Brazil international is said to love the idea of turning out for the Catalan giants.
Bruno Guimaraes: Newcastle transfer will surely happen
Now, it’s difficult to imagine Guimaraes taking Newcastle’s exit as a personal affront. He has constantly spoken of how much he loves playing for the club, after all.
Still, to expect him to stick around should the club not get back to that level would perhaps be being too optimistic.
With a release clause in his deal, it wouldn’t exactly be a surprise to see someone trigger it. If Newcastle cannot give him what he wants, a move could certainly be tempting.
That is not a reflection on how Guimaraes sees Newcastle but players leave clubs at which they are adored all the time. It, sadly, is just part and parcel of football at the highest level.
