Coventry City match reaction from Coventry Live as Sky Blues striker Ellis Simms determined not to ‘overthink’ his stats in front of goal
Ellis Simms admits he mustn’t “overthink” things too much as he continues to search for goals for Coventry City. The bustling centre-forward has just two to his name so far this season, both coming against QPR in September, but after making consecutive starts and cutting an imposing figure for the Sky Blues, the player feels he’s getting closer to finding the back of the net.
“I have played the last two games so I am happy to be in the team,” said the summer signing from Everton. “I need to work hard to try and keep my place and the goals will come. As a collective, we are still winning games through goals from other positions. It is a team sport, so that is the main thing.”
He added, “But it’s definitely coming; I need to keep working hard and not overthink things. We have good wide players, creating a lot of chances. Same with our full-backs, so eventually something will drop and it will hit the net. I am sure it is a matter of time.”
Simms’ best chance came late in the first half against Southampton, when played in by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto down the right.
“I think Tatsu slipped it in behind and the angle was quite tight from what I can recall,” he said. “Maybe another day I will hit it lower. On another day, it will go in and we will take the lead just before halftime, so I think we had good chances. We need to work hard to take them.”
City’s draw against the Saints meant they have now earned 11 points from their last six games, sitting in mid-table six points off the bottom three and seven off the play-off places.
“A few weeks ago, we were going through a tricky spell, but I think we have gotten through that now and the last few results have been good,” said 22-year-old Simms.
“We have to just keep working hard in training and getting those three points; hopefully we will move up the table quickly.”
Needs to run and close down a bit more. Too static at the moment just waiting for the ball to come to him. Look at Harry Kane you have to go and win the ball and make it happen for yourself sometimes. Has all the attributes just needs to work harder leading the lune. Not aggressive enough presently in 50/50s etc. Good look.
