Joelinton begins negotiations with Newcastle United

According to Football Insider, Joelinton has begun contract negotiations with Newcastle United.

Both the club and the Brazilian are optimistic about extending his current contract.

Newcastle United - We're still Ful of confidence, insists Joelinton

His current deal expires in June 2025, but sources tell Football Insider that boss Eddie Howe is a “huge” supporter of the 27-year-old and wants to keep him on Tyneside.

After a disastrous start under former manager Steve Bruce, Joelinton has transformed his career at Newcastle since Howe’s arrival.

He was the Magpies’ record acquisition when he arrived from Hoffenheim for £40 million in the summer of 2019, but Howe resurrected his career by shifting the striker to midfield.

Joelinton has played 58 games in center midfield since joining Howe in November 2021, but he has also been used effectively on the wings.

He has appeared in 176 games for the club in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and providing 14 assists.

Intriguingly, he ignored his teammates and ran over to the sidelines to celebrate with Howe after scoring a tremendous goal in Newcastle’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Since the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund purchased Newcastle United from Mike Ashley in 2021, the club has progressed from relegation contenders to a regular contender for European places in the Premier League.

Joelinton was instrumental in his team finishing fourth in the league last season and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

AC Milan fought back from a goal down to beat the Magpies 2-1 on Wednesday night (13 December), leaving Howe’s team at the bottom of Group F with five points at the completion of the group stages.
