‘Not the answer’: Pundit ‘can’t believe’ that Sheffield Wednesday want to sign £11.5k-p/w

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged not to sign Scott Hogan in the January transfer market.

Speaking to Football League World, Carlton Palmer told his former club that the Birmingham City striker is ‘not the answer’ to their problems.

Sheffield Wednesday look to have turned things around under Danny Rohl recently, claiming seven points from their last three games in the Championship.

However, their lack of goal threat has been an issue all season, claiming the lowest goal tally in the second tier.

The Owls have six strikers on their books in Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Bailey Cadamarteri, Lee Gregory and Mallik Wilks, however they have all only netted a total of six goals in 63 appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday are now looking to bolster their attack, with Dejphon Chansiri reportedly prepared to cough up around £30,000-per-week to bring in a proven goalscorer next month.

One forward that the Owls have been heavily linked to recently is Scott Hogan, who has fallen out of favour at Birmingham City.

The 31-year-old has bagged 35 goals in the Championship since moving to St Andrews four years ago, but he has been an unused substitute for four of Wayne Rooney’s nine games in charge.

While Sheffield Wednesday could look to snap Hogan up before his contract expires in the summer, Carlton Palmer has said he ‘can’t believe’ they would consider the move.

“Scott was a regular under previous Birmingham manager John Eustace, but he has not featured under Wayne Rooney and, for me, he is too similar to Gregory and Smith,” Palmer said.

“He is the wrong side of 30 and, at best, is a 10-goal a season man.

“Scott is on a big salary and, for me, I can’t believe this would be a player the manager would have identified.

“I know the January transfer window is a difficult market and you have to see what is available and for what money, but for me Scott is not the answer for the Owls’ front issue.

“Not the answer, for me.”

Should Sheffield Wednesday sign Scott Hogan?
Bringing in a proven goalscorer in the January transfer window is extremely tough for all clubs – especially ones that are sat at the bottom of the Championship.

It will be difficult for Sheffield Wednesday to tempt many decent strikers to join them when the possibility of relegation is looming, so they may not be able to be that picky.

Scott Hogan certainly isn’t the most inspiring choice, but could someone who scores 10 goals be what they need? It would certainly be an upgrade on what they have already got, while Danny Rohl would hope the others can chip in here and there too.

if Scott Hogan isn’t the answer then perhaps the Owls would have to look to the Premier League for loan deals, because it will be a big ask luring strikers in permanently.
