Wayne Carlisle: I Didn’t Think We Looked Like We Only Had Ten Men’

Rotherham United’s caretaker manager, Wayne Carlisle, was’very disappointed’ with the result this afternoon.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield after losing at home to Swansea City by two goals to one, Wayne said, ‘I thought we started really bright and even after we’d gone down to ten men, I thought we stayed in the game. And I think in the second half we caused them some problems.’

Asked how he thought Daniel Ayala’s sending off changed the game, Wayne replied, ‘I don’t think there’s any doubt it changed the course of the game. Daniel was man enough to hold his hands up and say he should have known better over the first yellow and was the second one a bookable offence? I’m not quite sure.

And he’s right, isn’t he? I think his first yellow was silly on Ayala’s fault—I actually think it’s a daft rule but it is a rule so it has to be adhered to too—but I do think the foul he got sent off for was his first foul and might have been better handled by the referee with just a stern warning. In fact, I do think that’s what was going to happen until he was surrounded by Swansea players who seemed to make his mind up for him.

‘When we came out in the second half, I genuinely didn’t think like we only had ten men.’

Expecting this to be his last game, Wayne was asked what the new manager would be inheriting and he said, ‘The squad at the minute is slightly thin; there’s a few injuries and while there’s good experience in the squad, there’s also some youth in the squad. They’re a really fantastic bunch of lads.’

Asked if he’d like to be a manager, he said, ‘That’s the plan. I was hoping it was going to be here but if that’s not the case, then I totally understand and respect that. I’ve learned a hell of a lot and I’ve really enjoyed it. I will be sad to leave but I wish the new manager, whoever it is, the very best of luck.’

Wayne did say that although he doesn’t expect to be in charge on Tuesday, he doesn’t really know.
