Crystal Palace played out an eventful Premier League clash against Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
There were eight yellow cards for the Eagles – including one for Roy Hodgson – controversial penalty decisions and also a red card before a late winner for Liverpool.
If defeat was not already enough for Crystal Palace to take, the Football Association have now added salt to the wounds…
Why Crystal Palace have been punished
Well, the south Londoners have been slapped with a £25,000 fine by the FA after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, according to the Liverpool Echo.
That is because Andy Madley handed Crystal Palace eight yellow cards.
FA rules state that any club who receive six or more cautions or dismissals in a game are fined by the FA, with such a total including the dugout area.
Given the fact this rule is set in stone and all Premier League clubs are aware of it, Crystal Palace will not be officially charged by the FA, nor will Hodgson’s side have the right to appeal.
In our view, that is quite harsh when you consider some of Madley’s bookings were soft.
For example, Jordan Ayew’s first caution came as a result of Virgil van Dijk kicking the ball at him while stood too close to Liverpool’s freekick – the Ghanaian actually tried to jump out of the way, while Rio Ferdinand felt his second booking was unfair too.
Crystal Palace cannot just blame Andy Madley
Of course, Madley’s performance in SE25 on Saturday was questionable – to say the least – but Crystal Palace cannot just blame him.
The Eagles now have just one win in nine Premier League outings, and the improved performance against Liverpool only raised more questions about why those levels were not shown against the likes of Bournemouth, Luton and Everton.
If anything is to be blamed, Crystal Palace’s bizarre injury situation and those among the medical staff at Selhurst Park should be in the spotlight.
Hodgson is now without Sam Johnstone, Dean Henderson, Tyrick Mitchell, Cheick Doucoure, Odsonne Edouard, Eberechi Eze, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Rob Holding and Nathan Ferguson.
Hopefully, Crystal Palace can get some of these key men back ahead of what is a daunting run of fixtures across the festive period – Manchester City, Brighton and Chelsea are to come.
