Nottingham Forest have Pedro Martins on their shortlist of potential candidates to replace Steve Cooper. The Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis has been weighing up his options since the midweek drubbing against Fulham.
Forest did respond at the weekend, however, with Cooper overseeing a battling 1-1 draw against Wolves. In the aftermath, it’s come to light that he’s not under immediate pressure of the sack.
Forest face Tottenham on Friday night under the City Ground lights. It now seems as though Cooper will get another chance to try and arrest the current run of form.
Forest have Martins on their manager shortlist
According to Greek outlet Upopsi Sports, Martins is now on the shortlist to replace Cooper at Forest. He’s currently managing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Gharafa SC.
Martins spent four years working with Marinakis at Olympiacos. He won 143 of the 221 games he oversaw, finishing with a win ratio of just shy of 65% and winning three league titles.
He was dismissed in August 2022 and that in itself makes this an intriguing one from a Forest perspective given that Marinakis has already shown him the door at a club.
Martins would be a risky Forest appointment
The 53-year-old has only ever managed in inferior leagues to the Premier League and this would be a risk. However, he’s a manager that Marinakis knows well and one he clearly rated highly at Olympiacos.
Although the Forest owner has sacked Martins before, the fact he stayed at Olympiacos for four years does make him quite unique given the owner’s strike rate with managers.
Martins just feels like too much of a risk for Forest to make. Any manager who replaces Cooper needs to have some sort of pedigree in a top European league and that is one box that Martins just doesn’t tick.
