ALAN SHEARER BLASTS ‘REALLY POOR’ NEWCASTLE UNITED DUO DURING TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR DEFEAT

Another day to forget on the road for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United, this time suffering a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Just like against Everton in midweek, there can’t be any excuses here because Newcastle United simply weren’t at the races.

But what will frustrate the fans is the fact that there were defensive errors once again from senior players.

Alan Shearer wasn’t best pleased with Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka for the role they played in Tottenham’s opener as he described it as ‘really poor’, as he told Premier League Productions (10/12/23 at 5:25 pm).

The ball was played across the penalty area by Son Heung-min after he outdid his former teammate, Kieran Trippier.

And given the attacking nature in which Ange Postecoglou’s side play in, they flood the opposition’s final third like no other.

Whilst it was a great watch for the Spurs supporters, Alan Shearer didn’t like it very much and he picked out some of the issues.

Newcastle United’s defending against Tottenham
“I think Lascelles’s positioning is really poor,” said Shearer. “If he comes back another yard, then he stops that.

“From Tottenham’s point of view, it’s really good. But I would also say, ‘why is he coming out with his feet instead of his hands?’”

Newcastle United need to find their energy again

Injuries and lack of form have seriously hurt Newcastle, as they are now in the middle of their worst period of the season – Ally McCoist thinks Martin Dubravka should be the long-term replacement for the injured, Nick Pope.

The worst part of it all is the fact that it came at the wrong time because the fixtures are coming thick and fast.

No more so than that all-important Champions League tie against AC Milan.

Perhaps this was the kick up the backside the Newcastle players needed.

But if they perform like this in Europe, then they will be bowing out straight away and heading towards the second half of the season in very, very poor form.
