Predicted Newcastle XI to face Spurs… Eddie Howe drops 21-year-old star, £12m man faces former club
It does not sound like Newcastle United’s injury crisis is going to get any better in time to play Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies head to the capital this weekend, as Eddie Howe‘s side prepare for another away game at a time when they are really struggling on the road.
Newcastle were beaten 3-0 by Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday night, and desperately need a response this weekend. The tired Toon players need a confidence boost going into their final Champions League group game against AC Milan just days later.
Ideally, Howe would make multiple changes to his starting lineup. However, it does not look like that will be possible.
But we do anticipate once change, and this is the Newcastle team we predict Eddie Howe will pick to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday
Kieran Trippier starts against his former club Tottenham
After making a couple of mistakes against Everton, Kieran Trippier will be eager to bounce back when he takes on his former club Tottenham.
The £12million man is one booking away from a suspension, meaning he will miss the Magpies’ game against Fulham if he picks up a yellow card on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Jamaal Lascelles is an injury doubt after being forced off against Everton. However, he is expected be fit enough to start and lead the lads out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Lewis Hall comes into the Newcastle starting XI
We do anticipate one change in defence, with Lewis Hall coming in to play at left-back ahead of Tino Livramento.
This is no reflection on Livramento’s form, however. The 21-year-old has been absolutely outstanding, but could probably do with a small rest ahead of the Champions League game against AC Milan.
That could give Hall a chance, with the teenager starting just one Premier League game so far since his arrival from Chelsea.
No fresh faces in attack for Eddie Howe
Newcastle’s injury crisis is a real issue, and the big problem is that Howe has no one he can bring into his midfield or front three.
Therefore, it will be the same midfield and attack that started the Magpies’ last four games. That means yet another start for Lewis Miley, who was one of few players to shine against Everton.
Howe will be eager for his front three to do more versus Spurs. Anthony Gordon wasted a few chances on Thursday night, while Miguel Almiron also failed to provide that killer touch in the final third.
Predicted XI vs Spurs: Dubravka; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Hall; Miley, Bruno, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon.
