Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion have suffered a setback in their search for a new manager.
According to reports, Swansea City’s approach for Tottenham Hotspur coach Chris Davies was rejected. Swansea’s first choice for a new head coach is thought to be Davies.
After sacking Michel Duff on Monday, the Welsh club is looking for a new manager. Duff was fired after less than six months in charge of the Swans, having managed 21 games in total, winning six, drawing six, and losing nine. Swansea appointed former Leeds United midfielder Alan Sheehan as caretaker manager, but they have been dealt a setback in their search for Duff’s replacement.
A report from The Athletic, however, says that Spurs have rejected an approach for Davies. The 38-year-old held talks in the summer with Swansea before Russell Martin took the job at Southampton, and he has now emerged as a serious contender for the post again.
Davies only joined the North London Club in the summer, having linked up with Ange Postecoglou. He has mainly worked alongside Brendan Rodgers, working alongside the Northern Irishman at Celtic, Liverpool, Leicester City, and Swansea. He was an analyst when Swansea won promotion to the Premier League and has developed during his time alongside the former Reds boss.
The BBC say that Davies is the ‘leading contender’ for the job and that their chairman, Andy Coleman, is hopeful of meeting potential bosses this week after drawing up a shortlist. Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay is under consideration; however, his lack of experience is said to count against him, while overseas managers have not been ruled out. Former Bristol City under-21’s head coach and now Notts County manager Luke Williams has also been suggested as a possible option.
According to WalesOnline, former Birmingham City manager John Eustace has been ruled out as a candidate. He was fired despite leading the club to sixth place and was replaced by Wayne Rooney, who is not interested in the Swansea job at the moment.
Duff’s replacement is likely to have been found by the time the Baggies play Swansea at the Swansea.com Stadium on New Year’s Day, while the Blues play Swansea on Saturday, January 13, and Duff’s replacement is likely to have been found by then.
