He has given his verdict on whether or not Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale should join Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United in the January transfer window.
And Ally McCoist has agreed with the talkSPORT presenter.
So, what has Jeff Stelling said about Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle United? Let’s take a look.
Aaron Ramsdale told not to join Newcastle United from Arsenal
Well, Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in the January transfer window. The goalkeeper has lost his place in the Arsenal starting lineup.
Ramsdale started the season as the number one goalkeeper for Arsenal. But it is now David Raya who is the first choice for the Gunners.
Raya is on loan at Arsenal from Brentford at the moment. The Gunners will reportedly make the deal permanent.
According to talkSPORT, Ramsdale is open to a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window. Nick Pope has suffered a long-term injury.
The Sun has reported that Newcastle are interested in signing the £24 million (The Athletic) England international goalkeeper.
TalkSPORT presenter Jeff Stelling has explained why Ramsdale should not move to Newcastle, and former Sunderland star Ally McCoist has agreed with him.
McCoist said about Ramsdale on talkSPORT (7:11 a.m., December 5, 2023): “He can’t let him go.”
Stelling replied, “But if he does, what would happen when Nick Pope is fit again? Wouldn’t he be in the same situation as he finds himself now at the Emirates?”
McCoist noted: “Yes, that’s why I wouldn’t say it’s a non-starter, but that’s why I don’t think it will happen. Plus, on the flip side of the coin, what if Ramsdale does go to Newcastle and is absolutely out of this world and gives Arteta a major problem?
“He’s got a problem at this moment in time, but if he goes to Newcastle and plays out of this world, and all of a sudden your own goalkeeper starts making one or two mistakes,.
“I can’t see Ramsdale moving in this window, to be honest with you. If he moves, it might be at the end of the season.
“It’s a strange one, Jeff. I understand Arteta trying to get quality and two players in each position, but this is a little bit strange because the majority of Arsenal fans were happy with Ramsdale.
“I thought Ramsdale’s done a good job; I really did, but he’s obviously thought that he’s fancied a change, and he’s gone and got his own man. That said, I don’t see Ramsdale moving; I really don’t, not unless he gets a sustained run; he could move in the summer.”
My View: Aaron Ramsdale should consider Newcastle United transfer
In my opinion, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale should consider a loan move to Newcastle United.
Ramsdale is a very good goalkeeper who has shown that he is capable of playing for big clubs. After all, he was the number one for Arsenal until recently.
I believe that the England international would walk into the Newcastle first team. Yes, Nick Pope will eventually come back, but a loan deal would mean that Ramsdale would be able to evaluate his long-term future in the summer of 2024.
Newcastle are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season, while Arsenal are looking to win the title.
