Future of Leeds ace in doubt as journalist shares truth amid ‘star man ‘ claims – report
Ian Poveda’s future at Leeds United may be in doubt after he was given permission to join up with the Colombia national team in the middle of the season.
The young winger has travelled to Bogota to join up with a makeshift national team in his first call-up for the South American’s, having previously represented England at several youth levels.
Poveda will now miss the next three Leeds games against Sunderland, Blackburn and Coventry but despite reports to the contrary he has not gone AWOL but questions have now been raised about his future under Daniel Farke according to the Yorkshire Evening Post (5 December).
“As the games on December 10 and December 16 do not fall within one of FIFA’s designated international windows, Leeds were under no obligation to release the first-team fringe player,” they wrote.
“Poveda is not understood to have travelled without permission from Daniel Farke, therefore his arrival at the Colombia camp earlier this week did not come as a surprise to those in charge at Thorp Arch – he went with Leeds’ blessing.
“Contrary to reports elsewhere, Poveda has not gone AWOL, although the decision to permit him international leave midway through a busy period in Leeds’ season does lead to questions surrounding the ex-Manchester City winger’s Elland Road future.”
Poveda has recently found himself being called upon from the substitutes bench, like against Rotherham, but the majority of people know he is at the bottom of the pecking order for our wide options.
The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Daniel James, Wilfried Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony are better than Poveda right now and with the squad performing as well as it is his chances are going to be limited.
So from that point of view it makes sense for Farke to allow him to go and play some minutes for his country to stay sharp, but at the same time it says a lot that the manager isn’t necessarily fussed about now having him available.
That doesn’t bode well for his future at the club with the January transfer window just around the corner, and it could be that the manager wants to see what it would be like to not have him.
