Kieran Trippier reveals truth about referee feedback & discusses Kylian Mbappe exploits
Newcastle United defender Kylian Mbappe discusses what happened after Szymon Marciniak pointed to the spot and punished Tino Livramento
Kieran Trippier felt it was impossible to talk to referee Szymon Marciniak in the direct aftermath of the penalty call that cost Newcastle United a vital win.
The Polish official pointed to the spot after a monitor check in Paris but Newcastle players were left flabbergasted by the level of protests at Parc des Princes. The 1-1 draw meant that Newcastle’s fate slipped out of their hands in France and they must now rely on Borussia Dortmund doing them a favour.
Trippier said after the game: “I mean it’s not like he would talk to me, there’s nine players around him. So it’s difficult for him.
“I get it for officials, it’s hard because there’s players around, I get it, it is difficult. But you know, it’s one of those where I’m standing here, disussing the decisions, why can’t officials?
“Why can’t the referee come out and explain why he gave that penalty, for example, just to give all the supporters, the media, yourselves a more clear indication of why he gave the penalty. Players get stuck here and answer questions, but why can’t officials – it doesn’t get spoken about enough. It is not spoken about enough.”
Newcastle had almost prevented Mbappe scoring for a second consecutive game in the Champions League. Trippier and his defensive colleagues were excellent throughout.
When asked about his own personal battle with Mbappe, Trippier reflected: “It’s one of those where I have played against him many times in my career. I played against him when it was his debut in professional football for Monaco and for England and yeah, I enjoy it. This is the reality, we’re in the Champions League, we’re playing at the elite level.
“You play against the best teams in Europe. So even at nearly 34 I always want to test myself against the best.”
But did Mbappe have any verbals towards United players after the pulsating finish? Trippier was also asked what Mbappe had said to him afterwards, he replied: “Whatever happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. No, I’m not here to discuss what we said on the pitch, emotions running high for everyone. That stays on the pitch.”
