Alan Shearer says it was actually ‘sad’ watching one Chelsea player’s performance vs Newcastle

Alan Shearer would have been delighted with Newcastle United’s 4-1 win against Chelsea over the weekend.

However, the Newcastle legend has actually admitted on The Rest Is Football podcast that it was difficult to watch one Chelsea player struggle.

It is a game the whole Chelsea team will want to forget, with it probably being their worst of the season so far.

 

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side take on Brighton & Hove Albion next at Stamford Bridge. It is a match the Argentine needs to win, as pressure begins to mount on him.

Sad to watch Thiago Silva struggle

While Thiago Silva‘s poor performance on Saturday benefited Newcastle, it did not exactly leave Shearer rejoicing.

 

Discussing the Brazilian on The Rest Is Football, the former striker said: “When you look at Thiago Silva, who has been a great of the game, and I know we all have poor games, but I thought it was a bit sad to see because he made two huge errors. One for one goal and one where he gave away a corner in the first half.

 

“I know how fit he is and how he hardly ever misses a game, but it felt tough for him yesterday [Saturday]. It wasn’t good to see, as it was someone who has been so great over the years.”

Thiago Silva will recover

Silva has been in this game for too long to let one bad match get the better of him. You would certainly back him to recover mentally.

However, it will be interesting to see if Pochettino actually starts him in the game against Brighton.

 

Benoit Badiashile is fully fit again and played in the Newcastle defeat, while Axel Disasi has been the main centre-back after Silva this season.

 

Following the 39-year-old’s display, could we now see Pochettino test a Badiashile and Disasi central defensive partnership in the Premier League?

It would not exactly be a new one, as the two played alongside each other at AS Monaco.

 

Dropping Silva after one bad game would be harsh, but at 39, there is probably going to come a point where Pochettino tries to phase him out of the side.

Maybe it is Sunday or a bit later in the season. We will have to wait and see, but whatever happens, Silva has been an incredible servant for Chelsea despite not being at the club for that long.
