DES BUCKINGHAM has stated his commitment to Mumbai City after rumors of a return to English football surfaced earlier this season.
On Thursday, the 38-year-old was named head coach of Oxford United, marking his return to the UK after a globetrotting adventure that included stops in New Zealand, Australia, and India.
Buckingham’s status rose while playing for Mumbai City when he won the Indian Super League title last season.
His talent and reputation prompted him to be connected with managerial positions in Sky Bet League One, with Charlton Athletic reportedly interested in September and Lincoln City reportedly contemplating Buckingham.
There was even speculation in the summer that Celtic, the Scottish giants, were interested in Buckingham once Ange Postecoglou moved over to Tottenham Hotspur.
When asked about the connections to former posts, Buckingham told this publication, “You have to do a good job in the job you’re in, and if you do that, you attract attention from different areas.”
“There have definitely been different spaces over the last nine months, but we had a project in Mumbai that I was committed to.”
“The most important thing now is that this was an excellent time and an excellent fit for me, and it’s a project at my home club that I’m extremely looking forward to, and I can’t wait to get going.”
