Alisson Snubs Liverpool To Name Newcastle United Save As Best Premier League Moment

Alisson denied Miguel Almiron with the scoreline at 1-0 before a 10-man Liverpool secured a dramatic comeback win

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson believes the quick-reaction save to deny Miguel Almiron earlier in the season was his finest Premier League moment. With the scoreline at 1-0, the Brazilian plucked a vicious Almiron volley out of the top corner to keep his side in the game.

St James’ Park was ready to explode as another goal, with Liverpool down to 10 men, would have likely sealed the result. But Alisson thwarted Newcastle United against the odds – receiving a show of appreciation from Trent Alexander-Arnold as a result.

The Magpies were dealt two devastating blows late on as a Darwin Nunez brace silenced the Toon faithful to snatch all three points. While the Uruguayan earned the post-match plaudits, it was Alisson’s first-half heroics which served as the turning point.

Speaking to Liverpool’s media channel, the shot-stopper named the save as the most memorable individual moment of his Premier League career. Alisson placed the save ahead of his sensational stoppage-time winner against West Bromwich Albion in 2021.

“I was thinking, ‘Try to score’, be there to help,” he said when asked about the West Brom goal. “It’s a desperate moment when you just try to do everything. The header was lovely.”

“(But) I’m a goalkeeper, I have to go with the save! I’m sorry… I think people will be disappointed with me for not putting the goal! As a goalkeeper you have to go for every ball, you never just look at the ball going into the net, you have to always try.

“It’s what I did in this one, to be honest. It was a really difficult save and a nice save to look (at). It always feels good and helped the team on that day with the three points. I have a feeling this one will be special for us.”
