Why Rob McElhenney is ‘Banned’ From Appearing In Advert Alongside Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have brought plenty of positive publicity to north Wales since taking over the club – but they are unable to appear in one specific advert together.

Off the pitch, the Hollywood duo have invested heavily in the local area, with Netflix also commissioned to produce the well-received ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary that aired earlier this year.

Unsurprisingly, there has been plenty of media attention on the club, given McElhenney and Reynolds’ high profiles.

But during a recent advert, Wrexham supporters saw that Ryan and Rob were appearing in an advert for Reynolds’ brand, Aviation Gin.

Well, Ryan and a different Rob – singer Rob Thomas.

Reynolds explains that McElhenney ‘isn’t legally allowed to appear on Aviation Gin commercials’ – which prompted Wrexham fans to search for the answer as to why.

Last month, alongside ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ co-stars Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, McElhenney unveiled a new whiskey brand titled ‘Four Walls Whiskey’.

As a result, therefore, it is likely this that is prohibiting the Wrexham co-owner from appearing in a commercial for Aviation Gin – a rival brand – with Reynolds.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, the Red Dragons owners were praised after donating £3,500 to a sportswear shop that had been burgled.

Shop owner Stephen Tapp told BBC: “It was overwhelming – I literally had to be picked up off the floor.

“We were about to wrap up the online donations page, then they doubled the amount I’d already received – taking it to £7,000.”

On the pitch, after appointing former Bolton and Bradford boss Phil Parkinson as their new manager, Reynolds and McElhenney have presided over a steep rise by the Red Dragons.

They won the National League last term following a fierce battle with Notts County.

Wrexham are currently second in League Two after 12 games, having not lost a game in any competition since being thrashed 5-0 by league leaders Stockport in November.

McElhenney was present at the Racecourse Ground last Saturday to watch his side secure a 2-0 win over Gillingham, with Ollie Palmer and Ben Tozer getting their names on the scoresheet.

Rob McElhenney has teamed up with fellow Hollywood actor Chris Pratt to deliver a one-of-a-kind birthday message for best mate Ryan Reynolds.

In short, the Wrexham co-owners have been known to send each other elaborate birthday messages via social media.

Back in April, Reynolds composed a Broadway-esque song to explain how McElhenney’s name is pronounced. He would then write: “Would be a real shame if this became a Wrexham AFC Racecourse chant.”

Four months later and McElhenney has delivered his own special message to celebrate Reynolds’ 47th birthday,

Featuring Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World actor Chris Pratt, the pair announced a gift located in the heart of Wrexham – a picturesque Memorial Park named after Reynolds.

The video begins: “Introducing the Ryan Rodney Reynolds Memorial Park, in Wrexham, Wales, located on the site of the old Wrexham Hippodrome.

“This park will be beautiful; will have open; green spaces; pop-up restaurants; we’ll have movie screens; there will be actual green lanterns; benches for old guys to swing on; a statue that may or may not look like Ryan! Happy birthday, Ryan!”

The official ‘Parks & Wrex’ website has explained the wholesome reasoning behind their latest project.

“This community space located in the heart of Wrexham will be a place for the public to gather, grow, and play,” it reads. “Working in close partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, we’re beautifying the park in the coming months to be a reflection of the spirit of Wrexham and Wales.

“And we’re renaming it. Probably something Welsh, not Canadian.”
