Manager Confirmed He Once Looked At Signing £115m Chelsea Player While At Reading

‘We were looking’… Manager confirms he once looked at signing £115m Chelsea player while at Reading

Moises Caicedo’s first taste of English football came in the Premier League after Brighton & Hove Albion brought the Chelsea midfielder to the country.

However, it could have came in the Championship after interest from Reading before his move to the Amex Stadium.

Former Reading manager Veljko Paunovic, speaking on a Space on X hosted by The Coaches’ Voice, has revealed that he looked at Moises Caicedo during his time at the Madejski Stadium.

The 22-year-old has since gone on to join Chelsea in a record-breaking £115m deal (Sky Sports).

Reading considered signing Moises Caicedo

According to Paunovic, Caicedo was once a target for Reading.

Speaking about the Ecuadorian after Chelsea’s incredible 4-4 draw with Manchester City on X, the Guadalajara manager said: “I still need to see Caicedo more. For me, Caicedo didn’t show up enough in that game.

“He’s a player I admire and with Reading we were looking at him before he signed with Brighton. I know him very well.”

Moises Caicedo too good for the Championship
When you look at the player that Caicedo has become, it is no surprise that he ended up at Brighton instead of Reading or another club in the EFL.

The Ecuador international arrived on the south coast with so much potential and is fulfilling it.

Chelsea fans are yet to see the best of Caicedo, who was described as “outstanding” by Frank Leboeuf on ESPN FC last month, but he needs to be given time.

Caicedo has not been at the club for too long, while Mauricio Pochettino is still obviously trying to piece everything together. The Argentine is a new arrival himself and has a very big squad.

You suspect that those outside of Chelsea will not give him time, though. They will be quick to point out that the former Brighton man cost well over £100m, which is fair enough.

Hopefully Caicedo can just shut out all of that noise and do his best. If he does, then that is a top midfielder Chelsea and Pochettino have available to them.
