Former Huddersfield Town Head Of Football Reveals Ange Postecoglou Massion To Huddersfield Town

Former Huddersfield Town head of football reveals Ange Postecoglou appointment near-miss
The club interviewed the now-Tottenham Hotspur head coach back in 2019 following Jan Siewert’s dismissal but the stars did not align for him to come to the John Smith’s Stadium
Former Terriers head of football operations David Webb has revealed that the club interviewed now-Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou as Jan Siewert’s replacement back in 2019, but that the timing just didn’t line up for him to come to the John Smith’s Stadium.

Postecoglou was then manager of Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos and was in the midst of a successful J-League winning campaign – an accomplishment that helped earn the Greek-Australian a move to Celtic in 2021.

According to Webb, Huddersfield Town needed a manager in more quickly than Postecoglou would have been able to serve his notice and move over to England, with the Cowley brothers, Danny and Nicky, subsequently appointed instead.

Webb told the Sun: “We had a couple of long-distance phone calls. I spoke to him and really liked him as a person. He was someone who I felt would have fit Huddersfield really well because of his values and I liked the way he played.

“I like authenticity and he was just himself. This is me, this is how I am, this is how I play, this is what I do. He’d done his homework on the Huddersfield squad – but where he was situated, we couldn’t move quick enough to get him over the line where we needed it to be.”

The Cowleys were successful in guiding Town out of a horrendous start to the season to avoid a second successive relegation to League One before being dismissed. Their successor, Carlos Corberan, took Town to the play-off final in 2022.

Webb’s time at Town proved short-lived as his departure was announced just months after his appointment, with academy manager Leigh Bromby promoted to replace him in the role.
