The latest Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive is that the club is looking to seal a deal with one of their most gifted young players
After Romelle Donovan reaches 17 at the end of this month, Birmingham City hopes to lock up the teenage star’s future.
Donovan turns 17 on November 30. Until then, minors are not allowed to sign professional contracts.
Wayne Rooney has already expressed his admiration for the gifted attacker, who was called up for the manager’s first senior squad training session. He later made his debut in the team’s 2-0 loss to Hull City, and he has since been impressed with the Under-21 squad.
And with his career just about to go to the next level, Blues intend to reward him with a first-pro contract, the next important step on his journey through the club’s academy to becoming a fully-fledged professional.
Rooney, who should know a gifted young player when he sees one, has already described Donovan as ‘excellent’ and his progress comes just months after he signed his scholarship terms with the club.
Indeed, Rooney has promised to give youth its chance: “I’m a coach who really enjoys developing young players,” he said. “I explained this to all the players. You have to earn the right to play, whether that’s a 16-year-old or a senior player. Whether that’s the best player or a developing player, If you train well, you’ll get an opportunity.”
Donovan also impressed Rooney’s predecessor, John Eustace, who included him in the Blues’ training camp in Spain this summer.
The Blues have already moved to tie up the future of Alfie Chang, with the midfielder agreeing to a new contract until 2026.
