£7m Wolves Key Player Set To Make His International Debut At Long Last This Week

Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa has said that he will finally be making his international debut for Portugal this week.

Portugal have already qualified for Euro 2024 next summer having enjoyed an absolutely brilliant campaign so far. They have won eight out of eight and have scored 32 goals, conceding just two.

Roberto Martinez’s side are expected to make it a perfect qualifying campaign, with Liechtenstein and Iceland their final two games.

Given they’ve already qualified, it is thought Martinez will be ringing the changes so he can get a look at all the players in his squad ahead of next year’s tournament.

 

It looks as though Wolves will have a representative in the team on Thursday against Liechtenstein, with Jose Sa now saying he’s set to make his debut…

 

Wolves star Jose Sa set to make Portugal debut after long wait

Sa – who joined Wolves for just under £7 million in the summer of 2021 – has been in the picture for Portugal for a while.

He first got called up back in May 2017 for Fernando Santos’ provisional 24-man squad for that year’s Confederations Cup, but he didn’t play.

Sa was then a part of the 2019 Nations League-winning squad, but he again did not play any minutes.

Sa was also selected by Santos for Portugal’s 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar, but it was the same story again for the 30-year-old.

 

But it now looks as though his big moment will finally come this week.

 

A Bola quote Sa as saying: “Yes, he (Martinez) spoke to me and told me that I would be the one to come in, now on Thursday. Obviously, I was happy and it will be a dream for me and an unforgettable night, which I will cherish for life.”

 

Toti Gomes is also a part of Martinez’s latest squad, and Wolves fans will be hoping he can also make his debut – given his performances for Wolves of late, it would certainly be deserved.

Sa deserves to make Portugal debut
This is fantastic news and it’s something Sa does deserve. He’s been in that squad plenty of times now and not gotten a chance due to the nation having some fantastic other goalkeepers like Rui Patricio and Diogo Costa.

 

Sa has enjoyed a decent start to the new season with Wolves. He’s had some great moments, like his wonder-save against Everton, but also some questionable ones, like his clearances against Liverpool and Luton Town. But many Wolves fans will feel this chance should have come much sooner for the star.

 

In his first season at Molineux, Sa was absolutely fantastic and was ultimately a big reason why Wolves did not ultimately finish any lower down than 10th. Many felt he should have received his first cap from Santos during that season.

 

In his second term at Wolves, Sa was nowhere near the level he showed in 2021/22, and it was understandable he did not play for his country.

 

It is good of Martinez, who’s been Portugal’s head coach since January, to allow Sa to show what he can do on the international stage – even if there isn’t really any jeopardy. Perhaps his predecessor Santos may still not have handed him a chance.
