Former Barnsley and Doncaster loanee won’t feature in cup trip to Wessex League Division One side
The newest addition to Pompey won’t be participating in their Hampshire Senior Cup match against Folland Sports.
Josh Martin, a former forward for Norwich, arrived this week on a two-month contract. He has been working with the team under John Mousinho since the end of September.
Given that Tino Anjorin and Anthony Scully will be sidelined for the remainder of 2023 due to injuries, the 22-year-old provides vital left-wing insurance.
Martin last played in a competitive match in February, coming on as an 81st-minute substitute for loan team Barnsley against Derby. It has been nearly nine months since then.
However, Pompey has chosen to field an Academy team for Wednesday night’s Hampshire Senior Cup third-round trip to Folland Sports (7.45 p.m.); hence, he has not been called upon.
Denver Hume is also absent as Academy boss Sam Hudson oversees a youthful team against the Wessex League Division One outfit.
Speaking before Martin’s signing, Mousinho told The News: ‘We will put the academy side out; it’s a really good experience for them.
‘They got us through the second round against Gosport and deserve to play in this game, which offers good senior football to play in and develop.
‘They were really impressive in that match, down and out, only to come through brilliantly well to get themselves another game, which is a really important part of it.
‘We reached the quarter-finals last year before losing disappointingly at Bournemouth, but it gets to the stage for Academy players where, as you get into the latter rounds against some of the better sides, they can showcase their talents.’
In the last round, Gosport had a 3-0 lead after 69 minutes, but in a thrilling finish, Pompey’s kids stormed back to tie the score 3-3 in extra time.
After that, in a shootout, Koby Mottoh scored the game-winning penalty to break the tie and earn a trip to Folland Sports.
Having won five league games this season, the Hamble-based team is ranked 14th in the standings.
On the night of the game, tickets will be available for purchase; adult tickets are £6, and concession tickets are £3.
