Championship underachievers fire their manager as challenges from Boro and Sunderland draw near…

After 13 months in charge, manager Matt Taylor of Rotherham United has been fired.

Following the Millers’ 5-0 thrashing at Watford on Saturday, Miller departs the team in 22nd place in the championship, four points outside of safety.

Next month, Middlesbrough and Sunderland will both play Rotherham; on Boxing Day, Boro will visit New York Stadium, while the Black Cats will travel there three days later.

Although Taylor’s replacement is currently unknown, Rotherham claims that the search has already begun. Neil Warnock, the former manager of Boro, is available and has overcome the odds to guide Rotherham to Championship safety before.

In October of last year, following the departure of former Exeter City manager Paul Warne to Derby, Taylor decided to join Rotherham.

The Millers had a difficult start to the current season, managing just 11 points from their first 16 games, but he led them to safety the previous year.

“It was felt by myself and the Board that we had to act now by making a managerial change in order to give ourselves the best possible chance of retaining our Sky Bet Championship status this season,” stated Tony Stewart, the chairman of Rotherham.

“It was not an easy decision to make, and we are grateful to Matt for his efforts over the past year. Needless to say, everyone at Rotherham United sends him their very best wishes as he departs.

Following Taylor’s dismissal, Michael Carrick and Tony Mowbray hold the positions of seventh and eighth longest-serving managers in the Championship.
