Progress report from Kirklees Council on revamp of key town centre building
Kirklees Council has provided a progress report on a key Huddersfield town centre restoration project.
Work on the Grade II listed Estate Building, opposite Huddersfield railway station, is well underway with essential works completed on phase one.
Kirklees is promising a ‘unique living experience’ once the council-owned Estate Building has been converted into apartments. A council spokesman said the project, backed by Historic England, “promises to rejuvenate Huddersfield town centre, support local businesses, and potentially offer a unique living experience”.

The council said: “For those considering making Huddersfield their home, the Estate Building will offer more than just a place to live – it will offer a piece of history. Furthermore, the meticulous restoration work ensures that residents will enjoy a blend of old-world charm and modern comfort in the new residential apartments. It’s an opportunity to live in a building with a story, a place where the past meets the present.
“The Estate Building restoration is a vital part of reviving the vibrancy of the town centre. It symbolises our community’s commitment to preserving our heritage and ensuring a bright future. This project also reflects the council’s commitment to history and community.”
Phase one work has seen the building being made wind and water tight. Stone work has been repaired and ornate stones preserved along with original features such as the weathervanes, gutters, doors, railings, and gates.
These works involved a full refurbishment of the sash windows to ensure they are fully operational.
Experts installed a new slate roof, replicating the original. Ornate and decorative stonework repairs were carried out on pinnacles, chimneys, and on the Station Street side of the building.
These elements were crafted from new stone sourced from Johnsons Wellfield quarry at Crosland Hill, Huddersfield. The courtyard elevations of the old warehouse building underwent a thorough steam cleaning.
The weathervanes have been refurbished and chimneys stabilised. Original cast iron gutters have been refurbished.
The Kirklees spokesman said the authority is continuing to work with Thirteen Group for the development of the Estate Building for residential use. The council has entered into an 18-month ‘exclusivity period’ with Thirteen Group, beginning in June, at the end of which the business will have the option to buy the property for residential development.
The Estate Building renovation is part of the Huddersfield Station Gateway project which also includes the George Hotel revamp.
