The CEO of Millwall explains why the company’s intentions to build a new training facility have been “hampered” and why he has not given a timeline for when things will be finished…

The Lions approved their plans for a new training base more than a year ago, but due to circumstances outside the club’s control, the project is not progressing as quickly as some would want.
Steve Kavanagh, the CEO of MILLWALL, is not willing to give a timeframe for when the plans for a new training facility might move forward.

In October 2022, the planning committee of Sevenoaks Council approved the Lions’ request to establish a new training ground in West Kingsdown, Kent.

Plans call for significantly more sophisticated facilities at the new base than at the existing training area on Bromley’s Calmont Road.

However, the club’s plans can’t move forward as swiftly as they would like due to rising worldwide inflation.

Kavanagh asserts that the new training facility is still “critically important” and suggests Millwall may need to be “inventive” to keep things going.

“Everyone in the world at this moment is aware of inflation and what’s happening in the world,” he told NewsAtDen. That has, to some extent, hindered us. Additionally, we’re working to ensure that we can move forward with our plans. However, the price of these items has increased significantly due to inflation.

“We’re working hard; it’s part of the long-term desire to move that forward but it’s not as easy as ‘oh, let’s just do that over there.’ It does have to be paid for, and that’s difficult, and we might need to be inventive about how we achieve that, and we’re looking at all those different ways as we know it’s critically important to the long-term future of this club.

“I’ve got an open mind, as the most important thing is that it starts happening. I’m not going to set dates or deadlines; I’m more focused on how we do it and making sure it’s deliverable.”
