Aspirants for promotions The most recent sources state that Sunderland wants to strengthen their defensive unit this winter by bringing in a new center-back.
Journalist Alan Nixon made the revelation over the weekend on his exclusive Patreon that Preston North End intends to bring in Nathaniel Adjei, a central defender for Hammarby, when the January transfer window begins in a few weeks.
According to Nixon, Preston may find Hammarby’s asking price a bit too expensive and will instead pursue a loan agreement with the opportunity to purchase the player at the end of the current campaign.
However, Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt has weighed in on Adjei’s links to England by claiming that Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United are also keeping tabs on the 21-year-old Ghanaian and are willing to battle it out with the Lilywhites for his signature.
Adjei was a player for the incoming Queens Park Rangers manager Marti Cifuentes while he was in Sweden, and it looks as though he will soon move to an English team to follow in the Spaniard’s footsteps.
Adjei’s market value has been estimated by Transfermarkt at £700k, but as he still has less than three years left on his current contract with Hammarby, potential suitors might have to offer a larger price. According to Fotboll Direk, Hammarby is willing to settle for £3.5 million.
Furthermore, Fotboll Direkt has also stated that Hammarby is hoping to maintain the services of Adjei past January but will demand a 15-20% sell-on clause should they accept an offer for the player.

Adjei has been among Sweden’s top center backs this year, so if QPR had the necessary money, Cifuentes may be open to working with his old man again, even though £3.5 million might be too much for many Championship teams, including the Hoops.
Adjei might play in England in the new year, though, as Sunderland and Leeds United might not find the transfer fee to be a problem.
