Wolves Boss Gary O’Neil Drops Honest Verdict After Conversation With Howard Webb And Neto Thoughts
Gary O’Neil has said that he had a ‘very open’ conversation with PGMOL chief Howard Webb on Sunday, after Wolves were on the end of another shocking decision.
Wolves lost 2-1 to Sheffield United on Saturday at Bramall Lane, with the hosts being awarded a penalty right at the very end.
Referee Robert Jones felt Fabio Silva had fouled George Baldock in the area. Replays showed that the Blades man was already going to ground before the contact was made.
The decision by Jones, and VAR deciding to uphold it, has been slammed by many.
It was the second incident in as many games, after Hwang Hee-chan was penalised against Newcastle United. The two were almost identical.
Gary O’Neil was again left fuming, and the Wolves boss has now revealed that he’s actually spoken with Howard Webb about the current state of play…
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil says he’s spoken with Howard Webb after latest VAR howler
O’Neil was speaking to Mikey Burrows for the Wolves Weekly podcast, and said that he spoke to Webb the day after the controversial penalty decision at Bramall Lane.
The 40-year-old has come away from the chat feeling better. He believes that things will head in the right direction.
He said: “I had a good conversation with Howard Webb on Sunday, a very open one around trying to improve things. I understand where Howard is. He’s trying to run his own team as well. They’re obviously under a lot of pressure at the moment.
“But after the chat, really, I am confident that they’re trying to shift things in the right direction. They’re trying to make changes, they’re trying to put things in place to make sure there are fewer errors.
“They understand the things that have gone against us this year probably shouldn’t have. I think there’s an agreement that a lot of things that have gone against us have been incorrect. There’s nothing they can do about that, or we can do about that, they’re gone.”
O’Neil was then quick to say that there is a focus for Wolves to just be better. So that these decisions don’t have to be costly.
Let’s hope things change, but many Wolves fans won’t hold their breath
O’Neil seems genuinely enthused by his chat with Webb that things are going to change.
He didn’t reveal any specifics from his conversation with the PGMOL chief. But hopefully there will finally be some improvements. Because things cannot continue as they are.
But O’Neil is right to mention that ultimately, Wolves do need to be better themselves.
It is important for the manager to relay that message, and to avoid a ‘victims’ mentality creeping in.
