Corey Blackett-Taylor found himself wanted by Derby County in the summer transfer window, and the Addicks should not be up for sale in January
Despite a disappointing draw against non-league Cray Valley Paper Mills in the FA Cup first round this past weekend, Charlton Athletic is advancing rapidly under Michael Appleton’s direction.
After just five league games of the 2023–24 season—Charlton losing four of them straight—the Addicks’ new owners, SE7 Partners, decided to split ways with head coach Dean Holden rather quickly.
Although Charlie Methven, the former Sunderland chief and member of the ownership group, was instrumental in bringing Holden on board during Thomas Sandgaard’s tenure at The Valley last year, he was also among the key players who chose to fire him after eight months in charge.
And in stepped Appleton, who, although he hasn’t managed his way up from League One yet, has done well as a manager at Oxford United and Lincoln City, but his most recent spell in the Championship with Blackpool wasn’t all that great.
Nevertheless, since his employment, Charlton has only lost twice in league play, winning four and drawing three. It appears that the tide has partly turned since he arrived in London.
Even though Charlton is only in 11th place in the table and five points out of the League One play-off spots, there have been noticeable improvements under Appleton, with Corey Blackett-Taylor standing out as one player who is flourishing.
Often shoehorned into a wing-back position by Holden, Blackett-Taylor has played exclusively as a winger, his natural position, and he has thrived, scoring five times and notching three assists in nine outing
