Carlos Corberan addresses West Brom ‘challenge’ as takeover talk intensifies
West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is trying to achieve success with the club on the pitch, while off it they are looking to instigate a takeover
Carlos Corberan is adamant that the club’s off-field efforts to secure a change in ownership will not distract West Bromwich Albion in their attempts to achieve success in the Championship this season. Speculation has increased recently regarding a potential takeover, which is being actively pursued by the club and led by managing director Mark Miles.
While the board seek to make progress on that front, on the pitch Corberan currently has Albion in as strong a position as they’ve been in at any point in his 12-month tenure; they sit in the play-off places, having collected ten points from their last four matches and head to Southampton on Saturday which presents an opportunity to leapfrog their opponents.
Things are going well, clearly; Albion are more than competitive on the field and their current league position certainly doesn’t hurt their chances of attracting external interest and investment, as they look to rid themselves of the era of Guochuan Lai. However things pan out in the coming weeks and months, Corberan’s laser focus on getting things right on a daily basis won’t change.
West Brom and a takeover: NDAs, Guochuan Lai debt and protest pause
“I don’t like to think to change the circumstances that I am working,” Corberan said. “I know I have these circumstances and what we need to do is get the best from these circumstances.
“Get the best with the group of players that are a group we believe in, get the best from them when we are having injuries, the best from my staff, from everyone to try to face the situation in the best way we can face it.
“The other things are just expectations or different possibilities that are not real, the only important thing is what is right now. When you compare the situation to previous or possible future situations…it doesn’t help. It can create frustration or, I don’t know, a loss of concentration in this moment.
“We are here for a reason and I always say to the players this is our moment to be part of the history of West Bromwich Albion, depending on us which type of history we’re going to write in the club.”
As ever, Corberan is only ever interested in the variables that he and his team can control, and that extends to the club’s current off-field situation. That outlook isn’t about to change any time soon.
“I think when life challenges us with difficulty and football challenges us with difficulty, the only way that you have to beat the difficulty is to face it giving your best and be the most creative you can be to find solutions that you need to and have the responsibility to find,” Corberan added.
“Because that is the only thing you can do – to take responsibility is to change the situation. You need to understand that in football and life we all like to live the best moment but sometimes in the challenging one is where you really grow and you need to be the coach you need to be.
“It is important to not be looking what this club has been before. Now you have the responsibility to do things better and to be in this moment. This moment is a challenge and we need to just give our best.”
