We take a look at some of the latest news surrounding the Royals’ takeover situation.
Considering their current predicament, it appears that Reading has not yet reached an agreement on a takeover.
Things on the pitch haven’t been ideal either, with several embargo periods and late bill payments over the previous year or so.
At the bottom of the League One standings, below teams like Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United, and Cheltenham, Royals fans are wondering when their team will truly collapse so they can start over.
They have been on the decline for a while now, and their supporters have had a rough time lately. This terrible chapter began around the beginning of 2022.
Although they had some early success in the previous season, it didn’t persist, and their dismal play in the second part of the campaign ensured they were relegated.
Their six-point deduction didn’t help matters either, but the Berkshire team was in no way competitive.
The Royals are doing very poorly in the league, and Ruben Selles hasn’t been able to consistently get the most out of his team, so their on-field situation hasn’t improved despite the change in management.
Some of their problems might be resolved by a takeover; below, we’ve included the most recent information on the situation.
Reading FC’s HMRC revelation
Last month, journalist Tim Dellor of BBC Radio Berkshire revealed that plans were in place for possible new owners to cover the expenses.
October salaries were paid, but it’s not apparent who contributed the additional funds required to ensure that staff and players received their pay on schedule.
However, HMRC is still owed at this time, and it doesn’t appear that any prospective investors are prepared to make the payment just yet.
What will Mike Ashley buy?
Ashley is expected to purchase Headingley, a cricket ground located in Yorkshire, according to the Daily Mail.
It was the scene of England’s historic Ashes Test triumph in the summer of 2019, when Jack Leach and Ben Stokes orchestrated an incredible comeback against Australia.
The same story states that Yorkshire has the option to buy the ground back, although it’s unclear if this purchase implies he won’t be purchasing the club.
Ironically, since current owner Dai Yongge purchased the stadium off of the third-tier side, he would have to purchase the Select Car Leasing Stadium if he were to purchase the Royals and want authority over the arena.
